How to Rewrite Prior Work Without Misrepresenting Originality
Academic research rarely develops in isolation. A new study often builds on an author’s earlier conference paper, technical report, thesis, dataset, prototype, or preliminary findings. Extending prior work is a legitimate part of scholarly communication particularly in rapidly developing fields such as artificial intelligence, software engineering, cybersecurity, IoT, computer networks, and ubiquitous computing.
The challenge begins when researchers rewrite earlier material without making the relationship between the two works clear. Simply changing wording does not automatically make previously published content original. A journal manuscript must communicate what has already been published, what has been retained, and most importantly what is genuinely new.

This exercise can reveal whether the new manuscript represents a genuine extension or merely a reformatted version of the original.
Rewrite the Literature Review Around the New Research Question
A particularly important area for careful rewriting is the literature review. Authors sometimes copy paragraphs from their previous paper and replace several references with newer ones. Although this may produce a different-looking section, it does not necessarily create a new intellectual narrative.
Instead, reconstruct the literature review from the perspective of the new research question. Begin by identifying literature published since the earlier study. Then determine whether the field has changed, whether new technologies or methods have emerged, and whether previous conclusions have been challenged or extended.
The literature review should therefore establish a new progression:
What was known → What changed → What remains unresolved → What this study contributes.
Paraphrase Ideas, Do Not Merely Replace Words
Responsible paraphrasing requires more than using synonyms.
Consider an earlier statement such as:
“The proposed architecture improves network performance by reducing communication latency.”
Changing it to:
“The developed framework enhances network efficiency through lower communication delay.”
may alter the wording, but the intellectual content remains essentially identical.
When prior work is being incorporated into a new manuscript, researchers should instead decide what role that earlier finding plays in the new argument. The material may need to be summarized, critically evaluated, updated, or connected to new evidence.
Clearly Identify What Is New
The strongest protection against misrepresenting originality is a precise statement of contribution. Researchers should be able to answer one straightforward question:
“What does this paper contribute that the previous paper did not?”
The answer should be specific.
Weak:
“This study provides an improved version of our previous work.”
Stronger:
“Building on the preliminary architecture presented in our conference paper, this study introduces a distributed optimization procedure, evaluates performance across three network environments, and compares the proposed approach with four established methods.”
Cite Your Own Previous Work
Authors sometimes hesitate to cite themselves because they believe doing so will make the new paper appear less original. The opposite is generally true. Transparent self-citation helps establish the research history and allows readers to distinguish the earlier contribution from the new one.
Do Not Hide Reused Data, Figures, or Results
Text is not the only material that can create originality concerns. Researchers should also examine:
Data: If the same dataset is used, explain whether the current study introduces new observations, variables, experiments, analysis, or research questions.
Figures and diagrams: A previously published figure should not simply be redesigned and presented as entirely new if its underlying content remains substantially unchanged.
Tables: Reproducing earlier results without clear explanation can create concerns about redundant publication.
Experimental results: If previous results are included as a baseline, identify them as such and explain their role in the new research.
Algorithms or systems: If the earlier paper introduced a prototype and the current manuscript develops it, clearly distinguish the original version from the enhanced version.
Use Disclosure as a Strength, Not a Weakness
Some researchers worry that telling an editor about previous work will automatically reduce their chances of publication. In reality, transparent disclosure allows editors to make an informed assessment.

A Practical Rewrite Workflow for Researchers
A responsible rewriting process can follow six stages.
1. Retrieve the Earlier Version
Collect the conference paper, technical report, thesis chapter, dataset documentation, figures, and related publications.
2. Mark Reused Material
Identify text, tables, figures, methods, data, and results that originate from previous work.
3. Define the New Contribution
Write a short paragraph explaining precisely what the current manuscript adds.
4. Rebuild Rather Than Simply Rephrase
Rewrite sections around the current research question, incorporating new literature, analysis, evidence, and interpretation.
5. Cite and Disclose
Reference the earlier publication wherever it forms part of the research foundation and disclose the relationship to the editor when appropriate.
6. Check the Target Journal’s Policy
Before submission, verify requirements concerning prior publication, text recycling, conference extensions, copyright, similarity screening, and disclosure.
A Final Originality Check Before Submission
Before submitting an extended manuscript, ask yourself:
- Have I clearly cited the earlier publication?
- Have I explained what is genuinely new?
- Have I added substantial new analysis, evidence, methodology, or interpretation?
- Have I identified reused figures, tables, data, or other material?
- Have I checked copyright restrictions?
- Could an editor understand the publication history without having to discover it independently?
- Does the manuscript make a meaningful contribution beyond the previous work?
- Have I followed the target journal’s specific submission policy?
If several answers are uncertain, the manuscript needs further revision before submission.
